How crazy can a person be?

Monsters. That is what I will call them throughout this article, for the simple and unique reason that a monster generally traumatises, frightens and marks its victim for life, and here, that is precisely the case. The term is not chosen by chance: these are men whose actions surpass all understanding, beings whose behaviour goes beyond what humanity should ever be capable of producing. And it is not all men, that is exactly why we call them monsters here. Paedophiles first and foremost, then men who allow themselves infidelity, a desire to dominate their partner, or simply a refusal to respect her, all monsters, to varying degrees. Before speaking into the void, I wanted to understand how a person can become so deranged as to commit such acts. Generally, studies suggest that the trigger for such behaviour lies in childhood, and of course in upbringing. A compelling piece of research, published in 1998 by Vincent Felitti, explains that upbringing and family environment are recognised triggering factors, but not the only ones. Social circles also play their part, though it is worth noting that if an individual is well raised and has the foundations of decent behaviour instilled in them, there will generally be far less chance of them acting wrongly, physically or verbally, in this context, and indeed in everyday life. Today, exposure to masculinist ideologies, amplified by social media, is enough to condition some into normalising such behaviour. Fortunately, more and more people find it utterly mad and reprehensible to espouse such views. I observed throughout my research, as did several people around me, that today's adolescents are increasingly exposed to the idea that such behaviours are normal, yet a large majority are also becoming aware that this is simply not acceptable. I find that reassuring. A woman is not an object. Everyone has heard that before, but it needs to be said again and again until it sinks in for those who still haven't grasped it. She is under no obligation whatsoever to serve anyone's sordid impulses. A woman, alongside a man who loves her for who she is, and who she also loves for who he is and whose wellbeing she genuinely cares for, is a support, a motivation, one more reason to get up every morning. She brings a smile, she brings happiness, she lifts the everyday. She is not there to be belittled or reduced to a supporting role; your mental strength will double or triple in her company. Let us not forget, in closing, that the cultures of the world are in no way a justification for acting in such a manner. No justification is valid for excusing rape or any other irreparable act, worthy only of a monster.
